"Thank You for Smoking" Movie: Ethics Essay

The movie "Thank You for Smoking" gave me a new perspective on how lawyers see things and how the legal system works. Instead of focusing on whether something is right or wrong, the movie shows how lawyers focus more on arguments, persuasion, and defending their client. This was really interesting to me because it showed how someone can argue for something even if they personally may not agree with it.

One of the biggest things I noticed in the movie was how Nick Naylor, the main character, always finds a way to defend the tobacco industry. Even though smoking is known to be harmful, he still argues for the company and supports their right to sell cigarettes. At first, this seemed strange to me And I even thought he was in the wrong, but then I realized that this is how many lawyers think. Their job is not to decide what is right or wrong, but to defend their client and make the best argument possible. This gave me a better understanding of how lawyers separate their personal opinions from their professional responsibilities.

I also found it interesting how Nick focuses on winning arguments instead of proving he is right. He often changes the conversation, uses strong communication skills, and stays confident. This showed me that being a lawyer is not just about knowing the law, but also about being a good communicator. Lawyers need to think quickly, stay calm, and know how to persuade people. Watching Nick do this throughout the movie made me realize how challenging and interesting the legal field can be.

It also showed me that the legal system is not simple for how much I think I understand it I always learn somthing new that I cant wrap my head around. This makes me realize there are many sides, and lawyers help represent those different perspectives.

The movie also made me think about how lawyers often deal with complicated situations. Even when something seems clearly harmful, like smoking, there are still legal arguments about freedom of choice and personal responsibility. This made me understand that lawyers often look at situations from different angles. They focus on the law, rights, and arguments instead of just emotions.

This movie also made me think about my own life. My sister is planning to go to law school, and I was actually the one who first put the idea in her head to apply. I’ve always seen her as someone who stands her ground, speaks confidently, and isn’t afraid to challenge others when she believes in something. At the same time, she is also very good at seeing all sides of a situation and understanding different perspectives before making a decision. With all of these treats, she got into her top school last month and will be attending next semester. After watching this movie, I realized even more that she has many of the qualities of a strong lawyer. She knows how to think critically, argue respectfully, and look at issues from multiple angles, which are all important skills in the legal field.
